New recaptcha sucks

Please, get rid of it. It takes me 10 minutes everytime to log in.
That new version is really horrible and now you must click several pages of images before getting the verify button.
And most of times recaptcha fails you even if you got everything correct.

Seconded, even though I realize that part of the reason it was implemented was due to bot spam. But it's not like there aren't other means of dealing with things like that. I'm glad the site finally got https support. Now if we can just not be strongarmed into giving google data every time we want to interact with the website, that would be absolutely fantastic.

After keeping the site running smoothly and dealing with growing pains, implementing a custom captcha or some other spam prevention measure that doesn't depend on big tech companies should be a priority. Especially when you consider the shenanigans that were going on with google drive a few months ago.

It's definitely something I'd like to do, but I haven't been able to find one that bots can't get through easily. Recaptcha isn't foolproof but it's pretty good.
If you know of any alternatives I'm all ears.

I think the captcha is fine the way it is. any change usualy causes fubar situations.

Tonight when logging in I ended up going through 8 or 9 sets of verifying images, including one where it almost would not stop spawn the kind of image I had to click until there was none left. Then I ended up getting a "ReCATCHPA was incorrect" error and had to go through another 8 or 9 sets before it finally let me log in. Not good at all.

I was thinking more in the long term of a custom self-made captcha system, like in the vein of what 8chan has. But I realize that's a much more rigorous undertaking that takes a lot more resources, which is why I had downgraded the priority of it in my previous post.

In the short term? I don't know about third party solutions, but one thing that shouldn't be too difficult to implement would be for users who have been on the site for a while and interacted with it enough in a meaningful way, (Uploads, non-spam comments) to have a way to bypass the ReCAPTCHA entirely, perhaps with a secondary user-set password. After enough genuine interaction a user not being a bot should be obvious, so that would be a non-risky way of making the ReCAPTCHA less of a nuisance.
